A MUSLIM catering manager in Britain refused to cook sausages and bacon because he feared he would be splashed with pork fat, he told an industrial tribunal overnight, alleging religious discrimination. Hasanali Khoja, 60, from London, said he felt he was at risk of contact with pork products even if he wore gloves and used tongs to cook. Mr Khoja, who claims he was discriminated against due to his Islamic faith, also alleges that in a meeting to resolve the situation, a human resources manager pulled faces and made racist gestures. He said he had raised his objections to handling pork at his interview for a senior catering manager job with London’s Metropolitan Police Service, but had been assured he would not have to handle food as it was a supervisory role. Mr Khoja got the job but when he started work at a police training centre in 2005, he was found to lack the required level of computer skills and later that year he accepted a more junior job at the same site.

A large metal baggage container was sucked into the engine of a Japan Airlines Boeing 747 on Monday as the giant jetliner prepared to depart with 245 passengers from Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said. The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. when Flight 61 to Narita, Japan, pulled back from Gate 101 at the Tom Bradley International Terminal. Airport officials said the vacuum created by the air intake of the left outboard engine was so strong it pulled the empty container off a baggage cart that was either parked or driven too close to the aircraft.

Congressional impeachment proceedings will likely begin today against U.S. District Judge Samuel Kent, who was sentenced to 33 months in prison Monday for lying to those investigating him for sexual misconduct. “Unless Judge Samuel Kent immediately resigns, we intend to introduce a resolution jointly (Tuesday) to commence an inquiry into whether grounds exist to impeach him and remove him from office,” said a joint statement issued by Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio, the committee’s ranking Republican member.
Senate leaders are considering new federal taxes on soda and other sugary drinks to help pay for an overhaul of the nation’s health-care system. The taxes would pay for only a fraction of the cost to expand health-insurance coverage to all Americans and would face strong opposition from the beverage industry. They also could spark a backlash from consumers who would have to pay several cents more for a soft drink. On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee is set to hear proposals from about a dozen experts about how to pay for the comprehensive health-care overhaul that President Barack Obama wants to enact this year. Early estimates put the cost of the plan at around $1.2 trillion. The administration has so far only earmarked funds for about half of that amount.
Woman sent federal social security “stimulus” check. The catch, she died in 1967.
Millions of Americans on Social Security are receiving $250 checks as part of the president’s stimulus plan — including an Anne Arundel woman who died more than 40 years ago. The woman’s son, 83-year-old James Hagner, said he got the surprise when he checked his mailbox late last week. “It shocked me and I laughed all at the same time,” Hagner said. “I don’t even expect to get one for myself, and I get one for my mother from 43 years ago?”
Prosecutors dropped charges on Tuesday against a former inmate who spent two decades on Tennessee’s death row before the U.S. Supreme Court questioned his guilt. District Attorney Paul Phillips said he still believes Paul House, 47, was involved in the slaying of a young mother, but acknowledged in his petition that new evidence raises doubts that House acted alone and clouds what his role was. Special Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood accepted the request after a brief hearing. House, who spent 22 years on death row, was free and awaiting a new trial next month when the surprise petition was entered.

The private-jet industry may have finally found its savior. During a speech to Duke University’s graduating class, Oprah talked about the secrets and joys of success. Among them: owning a mansion and a jet. “It’s great to have a nice home. It’s great to have nice homes! It’s great to have a nice home that just escaped the fire in Santa Barbara,” she told the students. “It’s great to have a private jet. Anyone that tells you that having your own private jet isn’t great is lying to you.”
