David Kellermann, acting chief financial officer of Freddie Mac, committed suicide in his Hunter Mill Estates home Wednesday morning. Fairfax County Police spokeswoman Mary Anne Jennings tells WTOP Kellermann, 41, police responded to the home after family members called police around 5 a.m. “We were called from inside the house to come investigate an apparent suicide,” Jennings says.
The IRS allowed foreign workers – many of them in the U.S. illegally – to improperly claim nearly $7 billion in child tax credits from 2004 to 2007, a government investigator said Thursday. Most of the credits went to workers who didn’t make enough money to pay any federal income taxes, J. Russell George, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, said in a report. In those cases, the workers received payments from the Internal Revenue Service after filing income tax returns.
24 year old man killed in freak softball accident.
A member of a men’s slow-pitch softball team has died after being taken off life support, two days after he was hit in the neck by a ball. Teammates say 24-year-old Alberto Naranjo of Elkhart, Ind., was sliding into home plate during a game Saturday morning when a throw struck him below his left ear. He started to get up, but collapsed.

The 26 U.S. cities with the worst foreclosure problems are concentrated in four states – California, Florida, Arizona and Nevada, a report released Wednesday shows. The report on foreclosures for the first quarter by RealtyTrac Inc. said the highest foreclosure rates were found in Las Vegas, Merced, Calif. and the Cape Coral-Fort Myers area in Florida. Next on the list were the California metro areas of Stockton, Riverside, Modesto, Bakersfield and Vallejo-Fairfield.

Mexican officials would select about 9,000 Mexican police for training at undisclosed locations there, one U.S. diplomatic and one law enforcement official said. The goal would be to quell corruption and violence fueled by warring drug groups.

In what could become a major showdown over the use of race as a factor in hiring, the US Supreme Court on Wednesday is set to hear a reverse-discrimination case filed by white and Hispanic firefighters who claim they were passed over for promotion because they aren’t African-American. At issue in Ricci v. DeStefano is whether city officials in New Haven, Conn., acted legally when they threw out the results of a promotion exam because no black candidates scored high enough to be considered for a management job. Officials said they were worried that black applicants might file a discrimination lawsuit against the city if they went ahead and promoted the white and Hispanic firefighters who scored well on the exam.

A woman who was paralyzed after disobeying warnings to remain in her seat during a turbulent flight over Texas has suffered the same type of catastrophic injuries as the late Christopher Reeve, according to her doctor. “She is paralyzed from the nipples to her toes,” said Dr. Trey Fulp, the spinal surgeon who will perform a second operation today on the passenger at the McAllen Medical Center in McAllen, Tex. The woman was one of two passengers and one crew member on Continental flight 511 from Houston to McAllen who were injured early Saturday morning in mid-flight.
Chris Simcox, founder of the pro-border enforcement group the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, will announce on Wednesday his plans to challenge Sen. John McCain in the Arizona Republican Senate primary in 2010.
