Bush or Obama: The Quiz

1. President Bush was famous for lacking “intellectual curiosity,” while President Obama has been called “the smartest guy ever to become President.” Who reads more books: Bush or Obama? 2. Bush was often considered to be in the grip of Big Oil. In contrast, Obama is a Harvard-educated lawyer. Which industry contributed more than five times as much as the other to politicians: the oil & gas industry, or lawyers/law firms? 3. Bush’s Christian faith was at the core of his political identity, and he was considered to be in the grip of the “religious right,” while Obama is considered more open-minded. In fact, Obama has said, “my faith is one that admits some doubt.” Which one refers to Jesus more in public speeches? [Here’s a hint: Bush wins hands down…ed]

Official: Major Hasan Awake, Speaking to Medical Staff

Fox News Radio reported that Fort Hood suspect Army Major Nidal Hasan is awake and speaking to medical staff at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. A U.S. Army hospital spokesman confirms Hasan is conscious and able to talk. Hospital spokesperson Maria Gallegos says Hasan is in critical but stable condition. Dewey Mitchell, a spokesman at Brooke Army Medical Center, says Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan has been awake and able to talk since he was taken off a ventilator Saturday. Killer’s loyalties not queried ‘for fear of looking anti-Muslim’

Fort Hood killer Major Nidal Malik Hasan expressed political views that troubled his fellow soldiers, but may not have been reported for fear of them being accused of anti-Muslim feeling. Investigators this weekend said they could find no link between military psychiatrist Hasan, who shot and killed 13 people on Thursday in a murderous rampage at one America’s largest military bases, and extremist Islamic groups. (SNIP) His fellow students complained to the faculty about Hasan’s “anti-American propaganda” but said a fear of appearing discriminatory against a Muslim student kept officers from filing a formal complaint. ‘Cop Killer’ Gun Used In Ft. Hood Shooting, Officials Said

The gun thought to be used in the Fort Hood massacre packs so much firepower, it’s known as ‘the Cop Killer,’ federal law enforcement officials said. Major Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly packed a FN Herstal Five-seveN tactical pistol, which according to federal law enforcement officials, was legally purchased from the “Guns Galore” shop in Killeen, Texas in Aug. 2009. The store’s manager, David Cheadle, said that particular firearm can hold 20 rounds in a standard clip and take a ten round clip extension. Cheadle said with one clip and one round in the chamber, one could fire 31 rounds before reloading. Hasan may have used an expanded clip in the shooting. [Leave it to the lamestream media, in this case abc “news” to come up with a stupid headline to a stupid story like this. Hey you dolts at abc, ANY gun can be used by ANY criminal to kill ANYBODY. Hasan MAY have used a high capacity magazine??? Nice reporting. Millions of extended magazines have been sold LEGALLY in this country for DECADES. The fact that an America hating muslim MAY have used one means nothing and the firearms store which MAY have LEGALLY sold this murdering muslim a gun has NOTHING to do with what this asshat did at Fort Hood…ed]

Homeland chief warns against anti-Muslim backlash

The U.S. Homeland Security secretary says she is working to prevent a possible wave of anti-Muslim sentiment after the shootings at Fort Hood in Texas. Janet Napolitano says her agency is working with groups across the United States to try to deflect any backlash against American Muslims following Thursday’s rampage by Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a Muslim who reportedly expressed growing dismay over the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. [Over 3,000 people lost their lives on 9-11-01 at the hands of muslims with murder on their minds and there wasn’t any “anti-muslim backlash” to speak of in this country so what’s this horseshit all about? We Need an Ask and Tell Policy Regarding Jihadists in Our Military

When the initial news reports started pouring out of Fort Hood about the mass murder (read terrorist attack) of some of America’s finest, I turned to my wife and daughter and without hesitation said, “I’ll bet you a hundred bucks it was a Muslim.” I was spot on. But shame on me for thinking such a thing, right? (Yeah, those of us who immediately thought that the murderer, given the circumstances, had to be a Muslim, we’re the bad guys.) Yep, a Religion of Peace adherent, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, as you well know by now, opened fire as he screamed “Allahu Akbar!” on a room full of unarmed soldiers, killing 13 and wounding 30. Unarmed soldiers. Wow. What a wussy. What a “mighty warrior” for Allah, eh? Unarmed soldiers. I say it’s high time to begin carrying on base because, obviously, such d-bags cannot read that military bases are to be gun free zones. [Ask and tell policy for jihadists in our military works for me. While we’re at it maybe we can take a hard look at some of our politicians too…ed]

Four Little Words

Ronald Reagan would embarrass himself and the country by asking Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall, which was going to be there for decades. So the National Security Council (NSC) staff and State Department had argued for many weeks to get Reagan’s now famous line removed from his June 12, 1987, Berlin speech. With a fervor and relentlessness I hadn’t seen over the prior seven years even during disputes about “the ash-heap of history” or “evil empire,” they kept up the pressure until the morning Reagan spoke the line. “Is that what I think it is?” I asked White House communications director Tom Griscom about a cable NSC Adviser Frank Carlucci had been nudging at us across the table during a White House senior staff meeting at the Cipriani Hotel in Venice. (Reagan had been attending a G-8 summit there and would shortly fly to the German capital.) With a shake of his head and a smile, Mr. Griscom confirmed the last-minute plea from State to drop the key sentence. [Reagan’s famous four words led to the tearing down of the Berlin Wall unifying East and West Germany for the first time since it was built in 1961. Berlin Wall blunder

World leaders past and present will be in Berlin today for the 20th anniversary of the fall of communist repression’s most visible symbol: the 112-mile concrete wall that split the city for more than a quarter-century. Conspicuously absent: the president of the United States, Barack Obama. Obama’s folks say he’s too busy to accept German President Angela Merkel’s invitation to attend today’s festivities. It’s pathetic that Obama won’t be there — and telling, as well. After all, it was one of his own supposed heroes, President John F. Kennedy, who famously flew to Berlin in 1963 and denounced the wall as “an affront to history” when he memorably proclaimed to all the world: “Ich bin ein Berliner.” And it was another predecessor, Ronald Reagan, who even more famously stood before the heinous barrier and declared: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” [Obama on the other hand hates individual freedom and embraces every despotic totalitarian regime on the planet…ed]

‘Non-news channel’ tops in Fort Hood coverage

Fox News Channel was the cable channel of choice for Americans eager for news about the Fort Hood massacre Thursday night according to Bill Gorman of TV by the Numbers. Similar to election night coverage two days earlier, in overwhelming numbers viewers turned to “the non news network,” as President Barack Obama’s strategists Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod derisively labeled it, for information and updates on the unfolding tragedy. D.C. sniper set to be executed Tuesday

Seven years ago this month, the captured Beltway snipers — John Allen Muhammad, then 41, and his accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, 17 — were in federal custody, accused of 16 shootings and 10 murders. They had set out to create a reign of terror in the Washington area to match the 9/11 attacks of the year before. U.S. Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft had a choice: He could send them to be tried in Maryland, where most of the murders took place but where the death penalty was on hold because of the specter of racial unfairness. Or he could send them across the Potomac River to Virginia, the site of three of the killings, where death sentences are carried out swiftly. Ashcroft chose Virginia. [Good move on Ashcroft’s part. I can’t help but think Eric Holder would have seen to it that this poor misguided man would have been tried in Washington DC and subsequently set free when jury nullification would have resulted in his being found not guilty…ed]

Freewheeling Young Voters Scare Both Parties

In November 2008, 658,000 Americans under 30 voted in New Jersey and 782,000 did so in Virginia. In November 2009, 212,000 Americans under 30 voted in New Jersey and 198,000 did so in Virginia. In other words, young-voter turnout this year was down two-thirds in New Jersey and three-quarters in Virginia. These numbers are extrapolations from exit poll results and should be regarded as approximate and not precise. But they tell a vivid story, and one with scary implications for both Democratic and Republican political strategists. The scary story for Republicans was plain a year ago. Young voters went 66 percent to 32 percent for Barack Obama, while voters over 30 went for Obama by only 50 percent to 49 percent. Some analysts projected an enduringly Democratic Millennial Generation that would send the Republican Party the way of the Whigs. But that future obviously didn’t arrive last week, and it doesn’t seem likely to arrive in November 2010. Young voters cast 441,000 votes for Obama in New Jersey but only 121,000 for Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine, who brought Obama into the state five times and featured him in his TV ads. [There is a reason why the left wing dominated teacher unions in this country have deliberately dumbed down our educational system. Youngsters who rely more on emotion than critical thinking when making important decisions can easily be manipulated. Students who never learn the true meaning and relevancy of our Constitution are unable to discern when their government is running roughshod over their rights as American citizens. No wonder Democrats would love to have even younger people voting in elections…ed]

Senior lobby’s failing seniors

Why would the nation’s largest lobbying organization, sworn to protect the interests of senior citizens, watch silently as Congress plans to cut Medicare spending by $400 billion to pay for its health reform legislation? Could it be that the interests of seniors and AARP are not exactly aligned? AARP takes in more than half of its $1.1 billion budget in royalty fees from health insurers and other vendors that market services with AARP’s name. “Medigap” plans make up the biggest share of this royalty revenue. AARP has an interest in selling more Medigap plans, of course. But there’s a competitor on the block. [Tear up your AARP membership and join the American Seniors Association…ed]

Brian Riedl: Cut federal spending first. Here, for example. And here. And here

To get a handle on how out of control federal spending has become, consider this: It surged to $30,000 per household in 2009. That’s up from $21,000 (adjusted for inflation) in the 1980s and ’90s. Yet rather than cut back, Congress plans to spend even more. Lawmakers want an additional 11 percent domestic discretionary spending hike in 2010, as well as an expensive new health care entitlement. In the absence of spending restraint, closing these budget deficits would require permanent tax increases exceeding $8,000 per household. This is absurd. Instead, Congress should reform Social Security and Medicare, eliminate outdated programs, and take back unspent stimulus and financial bailout funds. They could at least build budgetary credibility with the American people by cutting indefensible government waste, such as the following examples: [Clip this list and send it, along with an angry letter of course, to your Congresscritters. Oh, and maybe send it in with your tax forms on April 15th too…ed]

Jobs a low priority for Democrats

Americans are angry with Washington as much for what it isn’t doing as what it is. What it isn’t doing the most is paying attention to the still-raging economic disaster. Last week’s job numbers show unemployment nationally bumping past 10 percent and surpassing 15 percent in Michigan. Unemployment keeps climbing, even though President Barack Obama and Congress nine months ago committed $787 billion to creating jobs. Since then, neither the White House nor Congress has spent a minute honestly analyzing whether the stimulus program is accomplishing its goal, and if not, what other approaches might work. Instead, the administration is spinning dismal economic reports into positive news, allowing both it and Congress to ignore the economy while they pursue their ideological ends. [Voters in Virginia and New Jersey get it. Certainly the rest of the country will come 2010…ed]

What Coattails? Why right-of-center candidates are succeeding in the age of Obama.

All year, leading Democrats from the president on down have argued that the Republican Party is in the midst of a catastrophic civil war. You know the story. Successive election defeats have narrowed the GOP’s ideological range, and now an open struggle is afoot for control of its voice and agenda. Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin, it seems, are out to destroy Republican moderates and commit the party to a radical course sure to relegate it to irrelevance. Only a move to the left can save the Republicans. And, in fact, the new president and Congress had a real opportunity to divide the Republican Party. A moderate stimulus bill that offered a short-term boost and included a meaningful tax-cut component, for instance, might have won a very significant number of Republican votes in Congress last winter and launched a damaging internal GOP battle over the proper role of the opposition. Some restraint on taxes and spending in general, and on health care and energy policy in particular, would also have divided congressional Republicans and left the direction of the party in doubt. But Washington Democrats chose a different route. [Holy crap, this thing was printed in NewsWEAK?? How did such an even handed article about Republicans wind up in the pages of this lefty rag?…ed]

Iran Charges Three Detained Americans With Espionage

Iran has charged three detained U.S. citizens with espionage, the official IRNA news agency quoted a prosecutor as saying on Monday, but Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said there was no evidence to back the charges. The three, Shane Bauer, 27, Sarah Shourd, 31, and Josh Fattal, 27, were held after they crossed into Iran from northern Iraq at the end of July. Their families said they strayed across the border accidentally. “The three are charged with espionage,” Tehran general prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi told IRNA. “Investigations continue into the three detained Americans in Iran.” [So the three lefty idiots who thought they could play footsie games along one of the most treacherous borders on the planet without any consequences will now be used as pawns and cost our country big time when the gutless Obama administration caves on some major concessions to get their lame asses back. Someone’s in the Kitchen With Michelle: The Secret Ingredient Is Politics

Alton Brown, the host of “Iron Chef America,” fell into the turnip patch just before the show began taping several scenes outside the White House in late October. (The best stuff always happens off camera.) On the episode, which will open the show’s new season Jan. 3 on the Food Network, two pairs of chefs will compete: Cristeta Comerford, the White House executive chef, and Bobby Flay go up against the combined forces of Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse. In a collision of politics, cooking and popular culture, Michelle Obama will reveal the secret ingredient that the chefs must use in their televised cook-off: anything that grows in the White House garden (no further spoilers here, though). Mrs. Obama will also talk about her crusade to reduce childhood obesity through better school lunches, community gardens, farmers’ markets and exercise, which around the White House has the working title Healthy Kids Initiative.
