GOP nominee endorses Democrat after stepping aside under pressure from right
The Republican in a New York House race that has become a symbol of the divisions within the GOP endorsed her former Democratic rival Sunday, a sharp snub to the third-party conservative who forced her out of the race. Dede Scozzafava, who’d been chosen by local Republican leaders to try to hold the seat for the GOP, instead threw her support behind Democrat Bill Owens — only a day after she unexpectedly backed out of the tough, three-way special election. Ultimately, her decision not to back Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman in the contest to fill former Rep. John McHugh’s open seat is likely to enrage party leaders, who rallied around Hoffman almost immediately after Scozzafava announced her campaign suspension. Al Sharpton’s ex-wife and daughter get disorderly conduct tickets after dispute over red light
The Rev. Al Sharpton’s ex-wife and oldest daughter were arrested in Manhattan on Friday night for resisting arrest after speeding past a patrol car and through a red light, sources said. Kathy Jordan, 53, and her daughter, Dominique, 23, were pulled over around 7:30 p.m. for ripping through the light at Eighth Ave. in Harlem, sources said. As officers attempted to issue the two women a summons for the traffic violation, things got heated, sources said. The pair became belligerent toward the cops, arguing that they were only trying to get around the squad car that was driving too slow, sources said. [Oh, so the professional race pimp’s ex, who sports an amazing resemblance to an ass ugly drag queen, and her kid thought speeding around a cop car they felt was “going too slow” might not be that big of a deal huh? White candidate scrambles vote, attitudes in Atlanta race
For decades as white residents fled to the suburbs, Atlanta’s black political establishment, led by a string of strong mayors, revived the moribund economy and so revamped the city’s image that it earned a national reputation as “Hotlanta.” Ironically, that success – including a winning bid to host the 1996 Summer Olympics and a slew of Fortune 500 companies relocating to the city – has brought white voters flocking back to the city and, for the first time in 36 years, could put a white candidate back in the mayor’s office when voters go to the polls Tuesday. In a race testing racial harmony in Georgia’s largest city, some veteran black power brokers say their hold on power is being undercut by their past successes running the city. [Perhaps voters in Atlanta just want the best person for the job regardless of their skin color? What a shocking concept…ed]
Any number of pundits claim that we have now passed the worst of the recession. Green shoots of recovery are supposedly popping up all around the country, and the economy is expected to resume growing soon at an annual rate of 3% to 4%. Many of these are the same people who insisted that the economy would continue growing last year, even while it was clear that we were already in the beginning stages of a recession. A false recovery is under way. I am reminded of the outlook in 1930, when the experts were certain that the worst of the Depression was over and that recovery was just around the corner. The economy and stock market seemed to be recovering, and there was optimism that the recession, like many of those before it, would be over in a year or less. Instead, the interventionist policies of Hoover and Roosevelt caused the Depression to worsen, and the Dow Jones industrial average did not recover to 1929 levels until 1954. I fear that our stimulus and bailout programs have already done too much to prevent the economy from recovering in a natural manner and will result in yet another asset bubble. ObamaCare Vs. The Hippocratic Oath
Twenty-nine years ago I stood with my 150 classmates in Thorn Hall, at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, as Dean James Eckenhoff asked us to raise our right hands and repeat after him: (SNIP) The sad fact is that the Obama-Pelosi-Reid Administration’s 1990 page health care reform bill (HR3962) and supplement(HR3961) violate The Oath by stripping freedom from every person, family and business in Our country . This 19 ½ pound pair of documents, entitled ”Affordable Health Care For Americans Act,” will cost taxpayers over $1.2 Trillion, will institute 13 tax increases totaling $740 Billion, will increase Medicare Premiums to Seniors by $70 Billion, will cost shift $34 Billion to State budgets, and will cut Medicare benefits to Seniors by $426 Billion over ten years. Annual Medicare Fraud: $60 Billion; Annual Profits of Top Ten Insurance Companies: $8 billion
As 60 Minutes reported last week, Medicare fraud is rampant and has now replaced the cocaine (ahem) business as the major criminal activity in South Florida. Both 60 Minutes and the Washington Post report that Medicare fraud now costs American taxpayers roughly $60 billion a year. That may sound like a lot of money, but surely it pales next to the extraordinary profits of private insurance companies, right? Well, let’s see…. Last year, the profits of the ten largest insurance companies in America were just over $8 billion — combined. No single insurance company made even five percent of what Medicare reportedly loses in fraud. Lieberman: Doing nothing on healthcare better than public option
Sen. Joe Lieberman said Sunday it’s worth defeating a healthcare overhaul in order to prevent the creation of a government-run health insurance program. Interviewed on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” the independent member of the Democratic Caucus said doing “nothing” is better than a so-called public option. “‘Nothing’ is better than getting that,” Lieberman said. “We ought to follow the doctors’ oath and say, ‘First, let’s do no harm.'” The Connecticut lawmaker said fixing the economy and creating jobs is a higher priority than healthcare, and a government-run insurance plan would damage the economy by hiking premiums, raising taxes or increasing the national debt. Revealed: Lockerbie bomber defies doctors’ prediction of death
The health of the Lockerbie bomber has “not deteriorated” since his release from prison three months ago – despite doctors’ assessments that he would have died by now, a senior source has told The Sunday Telegraph. The disclosure will reignite the row over the release of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi on compassionate grounds despite his conviction for the murder of 270 people when Pan Am flight 103 exploded in mid-air over Lockerbie in 1988. Megrahi, who is suffering terminal prostate cancer, was sent home to Libya to die after medical experts concluded in a report on July 30 he had just three months left to live. The time span was crucial because only prisoners with three months or less to survive are eligible for release on compassionate grounds. [And this is news to anyone? In what may be the first recorded instance of a Muslim wife attempting to murder her husband for not being pious enough, a Staten Island woman was charged this week with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Rabia Sarwar, a 37-year-old Muslim, said she did it because her husband, a 41-year-old Pakistani native, enjoyed booze and pork and wanted her to dress in revealing clothes. (She held fabric over her face and threw a shawl over her head before leaving court on Thursday.) While the Sarwar case is sensational by dint of the role-reversal and the method of attempted murder (throat-slitting), it’s also pedestrian: Over the past two years, there have been about a dozen attempted or successful honor killings committed in the US. Last week in Arizona, an Iraqi-born man tried to kill his 20-year-old daughter because she wanted out of her arranged marriage; he escaped. [Welcome to America. White House: Afghan troop decision within weeks
President Barack Obama is still weeks away from deciding whether to send more troops to Afghanistan, the White House said Sunday amid pressure from lawmakers to settle on a war strategy despite muddled politics and concerns of corruption in Kabul. Top White House advisers said Obama’s painstaking review, ongoing since early September, would not be hampered by Sunday’s announcement from the top challenger in the Afghan presidential runoff election that he would withdraw from a race he was likely to lose. “I expect the president will make a decision within weeks,” senior Obama adviser David Axelrod said. “As you know, he has gone through a very rigorous process because the goal here is not just to make an arithmetic judgment about the number of troops, but to make sure that we have the right strategy.” [This is the same Obama who didn’t dither for a second when it came to allowing people infected with the AIDS virus to begin entering the United States by lifting the ban on such last Friday…ed]
State lowballed cost of green tax breaks
State officials deliberately underestimated the cost of [DEMOCRAT] Gov. Ted Kulongoski’s plan to lure green energy companies to Oregon with big taxpayer subsidies, resulting in a program that cost 40 times more than unsuspecting lawmakers were told, an investigation by The Oregonian shows. Records also show that the program, a favorite of Kulongoski’s known as the Business Energy Tax Credit, has given millions of dollars to failed companies while voters are being asked to raise income taxes because the state budget doesn’t have enough to pay for schools and other programs. The incentives are now under intense scrutiny at the Oregon Department of Energy, which is scrambling to curb their skyrocketing costs. The feds and the city are using some funny math to inflate the number of jobs created by the $787 billion stimulus program so far — with the tally including thousands of brief, low-wage summer jobs for youths. New reports just released by the Obama administration claim New York state has “created/saved” 40,625 jobs — including 25,526 in the city. A spokesman for Mayor Bloomberg told The Post that the city had “created” 3,000 jobs and that the rest represented already employed teachers and other city employees who faced possible layoffs without the federal “shot in the arm.” The spokesman could not immediately give a breakdown of what the new jobs entailed. But a memo issued by Deputy Mayor Edward Skyler suggested the number of stable new jobs was under 300. The memo had a footnote explaining that the city used a formula required by the feds to count 2,882 “full-time-equivalent” as created jobs. [Clearly the Obama administration is using a fraudulent formulation that they are REQUIRING cities and states to use so they can make it appear the 2010 Democrat Party reelection slush fund aka the stimulus program is “creating” jobs…ed]
As jobs vanish, factory towns slow to see stimulus
Many communities hit hardest by job losses, those built around dying factories and mills, have been slowest to see relief from President Barack Obama’s stimulus plan, underscoring how hard it is for Washington policymakers to create lasting work in areas that need it most. The manufacturing industry has shed hundreds of thousands of jobs during the recession as plants have closed or scaled back. Places such as the southwest Missouri city of Lamar, tucked amid endless fields of winter wheat and soybeans, have seen the cornerstones of their economies disappear, leaving a gap that even billions in roadwork and government aid cannot fill. Confirmed: Skin cream contains fetal proteins
A pro-life organization is blasting a Switzerland-based cosmetics manufacturer whose website openly admits some of its products were developed from the tissues of an aborted baby. Children of God for Life is a non-profit organization focused on the bioethics of embryonic tissue use in medicine and manufacturing. One of its current campaigns includes petitioning pharmaceutical companies to produce safe, effective alternatives to vaccines derived or cultivated from aborted fetal tissue. But the organization’s attention has now turned Neocutis, a company with offices in San Francisco which has developed a line of anti-aging products that include an ingredient the company has trademarked as Processed Skin Cell Protein, or PSP, developed from skin cells harvested from an abortion. “It is absolutely deplorable that Neocutis would resort to exploiting the remains of a deliberately slaughtered baby for nothing other than pure vanity and financial gain,” said Debi Vinnedge, executive director of Children of God for Life, in a statement. “There is simply no moral justification for this.” [This is just creepy as hell. Nashville officer shot on I-40 sues CCA for $14 million
The Metro police officer shot after a prison break in June has filed suit against Corrections Corporation of America, alleging that the company is responsible for the failures that led to the shooting suspect’s escape and the subsequent shooting. Sgt. Mark Chesnut was critically injured on June 25, when he was shot five times during a traffic stop. Police later arrested Joseph Jackson Jr., who had escaped from prison in Mississippi earlier that day, and his cousin Courtney Logan, who is accused of helping Jackson escape. The housing market is so bad you can’t even give away homes these days. Quote of the day.
We’ve never seen this kind of radical leadership at such a high level of power in the country. I believe that the economy is under siege, is being destroyed. Anybody with any economic literacy would not do one thing this administration’s done to try to revitalize the private sector. They’re destroying it.
