Army Officers Criticize Rebuke of Gen. McChrystal

Army officers gathered at a convention in Washington this week said senior White House officials should not have rebuked Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, for saying publicly that a scaled-back war effort would not succeed. The hallways at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center buzzed with sympathy for McChrystal, who has said the U.S.-led effort in Afghanistan risks failure without a rapid infusion of additional forces. Obama and his advisers are now debating strategy in Afghanistan, with some officials arguing against additional deployments. [Good for these men for standing up for General McChrystal who is much more concerned about the men and women under his command that the flake-in-chief stinking up our White House…ed]

‘We may have to save this president from himself on Afghanistan’

Democratic Rep. Donna Edwards, a vice chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, attended the premiere of the anti-war film, “Rethink Afghanistan” in Washington last night. In remarks afterward, Edwards quoted a House colleague, whom she did not identify, saying anti-war Democrats must work to rescue President Obama from his commitment to escalate the war in Afghanistan. “As one of my colleagues, who shall remain unnamed, said, ‘Indeed, we may have to save this president from himself on Afghanistan,'” Edwards told the audience. “I take that really seriously.” [But I thought “The Won” was so singularly brilliant he doesn’t need anyone’s help when it comes to the charlie foxtrot going on in Afghanistan?…ed]

American troops in Afghanistan losing heart, say army chaplains

American soldiers serving in Afghanistan are depressed and deeply disillusioned, according to the chaplains of two US battalions that have spent nine months on the front line in the war against the Taleban. Many feel that they are risking their lives — and that colleagues have died — for a futile mission and an Afghan population that does nothing to help them, the chaplains told The Times in their makeshift chapel on this fortress-like base in a dusty, brown valley southwest of Kabul. [Not hard to imagine why our men in Afghanistan are feeling the way they do these days after all their pathetic commander-in-chief spoken with the man in charge of the troops all of twice in the last two and a half months…ed]

The president fiddles, Afghanistan burns

Yesterday marked the anniversary of American boots on the ground in Afghanistan. Eight years into the war, the U.S. effort is adrift. Those who expected decisive action on Afghanistan from President Obama will have to keep waiting. The president told a group of congressional leaders on Tuesday that he will not approve a significant reduction in troops in Afghanistan (whatever “significant” means) and remains undecided on whether to authorize a troop increase. So no decrease, no increase but no decision either. Muddling through is the order of the day. [Aww, let’s go easy on Mr. Obama after all this IS his first real job and it’s just a bunch of America’s sons dying for nothing in that craphole of Afghanistan…ed]

Criminals may have been hired for census

Errors by census bureau employees may have resulted in 200 people with criminal records being hired to do door-to-door canvassing. The Census Bureau typically takes fingerprints and performs background checks on workers hired to interact with the public. But a report by the General Accounting Office (GAO) found that tens of thousands of workers were improperly finger-printed by bureau employees. The GAO fears that the name checks performed on those employees was not sufficient without fingerprints. Breakfast at school now is on the principal

In a locally unprecedented move, the School District of Philadelphia will hold principals accountable for the number of students eating breakfast in their schools. Breakfast participation will be part of the report card that rates principals each year, along with categories such as attendance and math and reading performance. All 165,000 students in Philadelphia public schools, regardless of income, are eligible for free breakfasts. But just 54,000 ate breakfast last year, district figures show. [This is unbelievable! Principals will be responsible for forcing students to eat BREAKFAST at their schools? What the hell ever happened to PARENTS taking care of their OWN children?…ed]

Swine flu: the real threat is panic

News flash: Swine flu is a massively overrated threat — overrated not only in the media but by the World Health Organization, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and others who have a duty to know better. The presidential science council warned in late August that, “in a plausible scenario,” swine flu might kill 90,000 Americans with the epidemic peaking in “mid-October.” But it’s now obvious that this won’t happen. Total deaths since Aug. 30 from “Influenza and Pneumonia-Associated” illness are 1,397, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site FluView (cdc.gov/flu/weekly/). But only 192 of those have been laboratory-confirmed as flu of any type. (And yes, people die of pneumonia from many causes other than flu.) In fact, FluView reports that deaths from influenza and pneumonia are well within the normal bounds for this time of year — or, as the CDC puts it, “below the epidemic threshold.” [Swine flu is nothing but another distraction and another manufactured “crisis” the Obama administration will use to find a way to further restrict the freedoms of American citizens…ed]

When last we left Gerald Walpin, the unfairly fired inspector general for the Corporation for National and Community Service, he had filed a lawsuit on July 17 protesting his dismissal. He submitted technical amendments to his complaint on July 24, and the government was supposed to respond within 60 days. Seventy-five days later, the government still is stonewalling. Justice delayed is justice denied. [Notice how the lamestream media hasn’t touched this scandal in order to once again protect their guy in the White House…ed]

It’s looking impossible to clean this House

And Democrats running Congress have their “motion to refer.” That was the slimy tool Speaker Nancy Pelosi wielded on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday to cover up for her tax-dodging top committee chairman, Charlie Rangel. In a convoluted parliamentary charade, Democrats voted in nearly lockstep to thwart a resolution to remove Rangel from the powerful chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee, where he sits as the nation’s top tax-writer — at least until his numerous ethical and legal woes have been resolved. [Recall that it was this wicked bitch of the west, Nancy Pelosi, who claimed she would preside over the most ethical House in history back in 2006…ed]

Candor about taxes is rare in Washington, so when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi admits that Democrats may have to impose a huge new tax on the middle class to fund their spending ambitions, believe her. Speaking with PBS’s Charlie Rose on Monday, Mrs. Pelosi mused publicly about the rising possibility of enacting a value-added tax, or VAT, as part of broader tax reform. “Somewhere along the way, a value-added tax plays into this,” she said. “Of course, we want to take down the health-care cost, that’s one part of it. But in the scheme of things, I think it’s fair to look at a value-added tax as well.” [Open your wallet even wider, Pelosi and the rest of the Democrats need more money to fund their out of control spending binge…ed]

Budget deficit hit record $1.4T in 2009

The federal budget deficit tripled to a record $1.4 trillion for the 2009 fiscal year that ended last week, congressional analysts said Wednesday. The Congressional Budget Office estimate, while expected, is bad news for the White House and its allies in Congress as they press ahead with health care overhaul legislation that could cost $900 billion over the next decade. The unprecedented flood of red ink flows from several factors, including a big drop in tax revenues due to the recession, $245 billion in emergency spending on the Wall Street bailout and the takeover of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Then there is almost $200 billion in costs from President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus bill, as well as increases in programs such as unemployment benefits and food stamps. Taking the pill for past 40 years ‘has put women off masculine men’

It ushered in the 1960s sexual revolution and gave women control over their own fertility. But the Pill may also have changed women’s taste in men, according to a study. Scientists say the hormones in the oral contraceptive suppress a woman’s interest in masculine men and make boyish men more attractive. Although the change occurs for just a few days each month, it may have been highly influential since use of the Pill began more than 40 years ago. Sharp debate at high court over cross on US land

As the Supreme Court weighed a dispute over a religious symbol on public land Wednesday, Justice Antonin Scalia was having difficulty understanding how some people might feel excluded by a cross that was put up as a memorial to soldiers killed in World War I. “It’s erected as a war memorial. I assume it is erected in honor of all of the war dead,” Scalia said of the cross that the Veterans of Foreign Wars built 75 years ago atop an outcropping in the Mojave National Preserve. “What would you have them erect?…Some conglomerate of a cross, a Star of David, and you know, a Muslim half moon and star?” [How did something as lame and stupid as this manage to reach the US Supreme Court?…ed]

Scuffles break out as thousands apply for homeless assistance in Detroit

Scuffles erupted as several thousand Detroit residents jockeyed, pushed and shoved Wednesday to get free money being offered to only 3,500 of the city’s recently or soon to be homeless. Several received medical treatment for fainting or exhaustion while frantically trying to obtain the applications for federal housing assistance. The long lines and short tempers highlighted the frustration and desperation that Detroit residents feel struggling through an economic nightmare. Leighton Steward is on Capitol Hill this week armed with studies and his book Fire, Ice and Paradise in a bid to show senators working on the energy bill that the carbon dioxide cap-and-trade scheme could actually hurt the environment by reducing CO2 levels. “I’m trying to kill the whole thing,” he says. “We are tilting at windmills.” He is meeting with several GOP lawmakers and has plans to meet with some Democrats later this week. Democrats are seizing on a GOP press release that said Speaker Nancy Pelosi should be “put in her place” to paint Republicans as out of touch with women. The offensive comes as Republican candidates for governor in Virginia and New Jersey have come under attack for their views on women. Both GOP candidates have seen their leads narrow in races seen by both parties as bellwethers. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) on Wednesday stopped short of calling Republicans sexist, but depicted the GOP as holding “extreme” and “outdated” views. Rep. Michelle Bachmann Suspects That TV Hosts Are Stalking Her

Last night Rep. Michele Bachmann appeared on The O’Reilly Factor and was told by the host that she is “second to Sarah Palin in far left angst…they’re after you now.” Bachmann responded by saying “it’s almost like I have personal stalkers, only they have TV shows” explaining that they are on a competing cable network (hint – it’s MSNBC). Bachmann also suspects that MSNBC has a “stereotype for women” in which she does not fit into. [Speaking of the Democrat allies in the state run media going after Republican women…ed]
