Montana city’s jail deal delayed amid controversy
Plans for a California company to take over the city’s empty jail were put on hold Monday, following last week’s revelations that the company’s lead figure has a criminal history. The decision came as Hardin’s leaders announced the resignation of Becky Convery, an attorney who helped craft the jail deal for the small city. Hardin officials had tried in vain for two years to fill the 464-bed jail before striking an agreement last month with convicted felon Mike Hilton and his Santa Ana, Calif.-company, American Police Force. But following last week’s news that Hilton has a history of fraud — including several years in jail and three civil judgments against him for more than $1.1 million — Hardin’s economic development authority said it was stepping back from the deal. ACORN embezzlement was $5 million, La. attorney general says
Louisiana’s attorney general has broadened the scope of an investigation of ACORN to include a possible embezzlement of $5 million a decade ago within the community organization, five times more than previously reported. ACORN Chief Executive Officer Bertha Lewis said the new reported amount is “completely false.” Attorney General Buddy Caldwell has been conducting an investigation of ACORN since June. [Let’s see. Obama, however, has failed black America, and that failure may linger for a long time. The election of a black president, all other things being equal, is a good sign in American politics. I continue to be amazed at the naiveté of people who keep giving President Barack Obama the benefit of the doubt concerning his radical appointments, saying his administration isn’t doing its job in vetting the appointees. When will they wake up to the reality that Obama is deliberately picking people, such as Kevin Jennings, who share his radical values? When prescient commentators were warning of Obama’s radical friends and colleagues, such as Jeremiah Wright and William Ayers, during the campaign, his apologists diverted proper scrutiny, saying it’s absurd to judge Obama by association. Senate will hold hearing to probe Obama czars
A Senate Judiciary subcommittee on Tuesday will scrutinize the “czar” system used by President Obama and previous administrations. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., who heads the Senate Judiciary Constitution Subcommittee, said he wants to explore whether the dozens of czars appointed by the Obama administration constitute “an end run around the advice and consent process.” Feingold said his probe does not involve Senate-confirmed czars such as the Director of National Intelligence, Dennis Blair. “I am most interested in those advisors who have been given important portfolios without undergoing Senate scrutiny,” Feingold said. Holdren warned of coming ice age
What is clear from the record going back over nearly four decades is that White House science czar John Holdren is a climate alarmist, even if he can’t make up his mind whether the crisis is the Earth warming up or cooling down. But long before Holdren was the global warming Cassandra he is today, he was a global cooling alarmist predicting a new ice age. The only consistency seems to be that Holdren has always utilized climate hysteria to argue that government must mandate public policy measures to prevent imminent and otherwise unavoidable climate catastrophes. In the 1970s, Holdren’s theme was that government-mandated population control was essential to prevent “eco-disasters” such as the foreseen coming new ice age; today Holdren urges immediate passage of the Obama administration’s proposed cap-and-trade legislation to control carbon emissions before it is too late to save the planet from global warming. As Congress lurches closer to a decision on an enormous overhaul of the American health care system, pressure is mounting on legislative leaders to make the final bill available online for citizens to read before a vote. Limbaugh, Checketts interested in Rams
Green Bay Packers fans are known as cheeseheads. Could fans of the St. Louis Rams soon be dittoheads? Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh said Tuesday he is teaming up with St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts in a bid to buy the Rams, owners of the NFL’s longest losing streak at 14 and just 5-31 since 2007. In a statement, Limbaugh declined to discuss details, citing a confidentiality agreement with Goldman Sachs, the investment firm hired by the family of former Rams owner Georgia Frontiere to review assets of her estate, including the NFL team. Limbaugh also declined to discuss other partners that might be involved in the bid, but said he and Checketts would operate the team. Video shows cabby, pedicab driver brawl
Midtown tourists lining up yesterday for tickets to see David Letterman’s “Late Show” got a free performance more fitting of the World Wrestling Federation when a cabby and a pedicab driver came to blows in the middle of Broadway. But this was no stunt dreamed up by Letterman. The fight, captured by a Fox 5 news crew, happened at about 10:30 a.m. after a verbal dispute between the pedicab driver and the hack as they rolled up to the corner of Broadway and 53rd Street, near the Ed Sullivan Theater. [Nothing like some New York City cabby fisticuffs to break up a rather mundane day…ed]

Elderly Texas Woman Tasered by Cop Accepts $40G Settlement
A 72-year-old woman whose Tasering by a deputy constable was captured on video and shown nationwide has accepted a $40,000 settlement offer from a Texas county. Kathryn Winkfein was shocked with a stun gun after she dared the constable to do so during a May traffic stop. At one point, she sought more than $135,000 for pain and suffering, medical expenses and humiliation. Hotmail security breach spreads as 20,000 Gmail and Yahoo! passwords are posted online
The massive security breach that led to millions of Hotmail customers being advised to change their passwords has now spread to users of email services including Gmail and Yahoo! Mail. Up to 21million people and businesses who use the Hotmail service in the UK were warned they are potentially at risk of being defrauded after passwords were acquired illegally. Around 10,000 passwords were obtained by hackers who created a fake website identical to Hotmail’s to fool users into entering their email address and password in a ‘phishing’ scam.
