Last year, lawmakers excoriated the CEOs of the Big Three automakers for traveling to Washington, D.C., by private jet to attend a hearing about a possible bailout of their companies. But apparently Congress is not philosophically averse to private air travel: At the end of July, the House approved nearly $200 million for the Air Force to buy three elite Gulfstream jets for ferrying top government officials and Members of Congress.
Cash for clunkers big boom for FOREIGN car companies.
Four of the top five models sold so far under the U.S. “cash for clunkers” program, aimed at boosting the auto industry, are made by foreign automakers, according to Transportation Department data. Ford Motor Co.’s Focus was the top seller, followed by Toyota Motor Corp.’s Corolla, Honda Motor Co.’s Civic and Toyota’s Prius and Camry, data from the department showed today.
The Obama administration is refusing to quickly release government records on its “cash-for-clunkers” rebate program that would substantiate — or undercut — White House claims of the program’s success, even as the president presses the Senate for a quick vote for $2 billion to boost car sales. The Transportation Department said it will provide the data as soon as possible but did not specify a time frame or promise release of the data before the Senate votes whether to spend $2 billion more on the program.
Soldier gets 30 days in the clink for refusing orders to deploy to Afghanistan.
A 24-year-old Fort Hood soldier has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for refusing to deploy to Afghanistan. Spc. Victor Agosto, of Miami, was sentenced after entering a guilty plea during an hourlong military-court hearing Wednesday at the central Texas Army post.
Nothing is perhaps more pathetic than the exertions of economic developers and politicians grasping at straws, particularly during hard times. Over the past decade, we have turned from one panacea to another, from the onset of the information age to the creative class to the boom in biotech, nanotech and now the “green economy.”
The health care debate made it’s way to Green Bay Monday night, but it was less a debate than a shouting match. Democratic Congressman Steve Kagen faced heavy opposition during a public listening session at the Brown County Library.

Antigua’s highest mountain officially became “Mount Obama” on Tuesday as the small Caribbean nation celebrated the American president on his birthday and saluted him as a symbol of black achievement. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer presided over the re-christening ceremony at the base of the mountain, unveiling a stone sculpture and plaque honoring the president as an inspiration in the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda and throughout the Caribbean.
YO, little five foot nothing Rahm Emanuel this ain’t Chicago ya know?
Rep. Darrell Issa, R-CA, has a message for White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel:
“While this type of scare tactic may work In Chicago, it will not work to intimidate me or other Members of the United States Congress.” It’s not quite a young Ellot Ness glowering at Al Capone on the steps of a ritzy Chicago hotel, but it may be the next best thing and it could mark a turning point in President Obama’s relations with the Congress that is dominated by members of his own party.
Another kick in the groin for Al Gore and his global warming nonsense.
Last month was Illinois’ coldest July since 1924. Preliminary data gathered by researchers at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign shows the average temperature last month was 70.4 degrees. That’s 5.3 degrees below normal. Climatologist Jim Angel says the previous record, set 85 years ago, was 71.5 degrees.
California’s state government has managed to add thousands of jobs during the past year, defying a mammoth budget deficit and a brutal recession. The job growth for state workers contrasts with the loss of 759,000 jobs in California’s private industry in the past 12 months. “I don’t know how this can happen,” said David Kline, a spokesman for the California Taxpayers Association.
Doctor C.L. Gray and his Physicians for Reform group tell us of the horror story of Oregon’s government run healthcare plan that offered a cancer patient named Barbara all the suicide assisted funding she wanted, but not one penny for the medical care that could save her life.
Following is text of a blog kept by George Sodini, the man suspected of opening fire in a Pittsburgh-area gym, killing three and injuring at least 15 others before apparently turning a gun on himself. The text is in full, except for expletives or racial slurs removed by ABC News. The blog page had no pictures, other than a link to an apparent self-portrait of Sodini. Lines in boldface are as they appeared in the blog.
The Obama resistance continues to grow as his agenda becomes clear even to the dolts among us.
Spontaneous, uncoordinated, passionate — citizen resistance to Obama socialism grows by the day. America is no stranger to resistance. The nation was born from citizen resistance that had mixed support among the colonists. About one in five was loyal to the King. Some of the bitterest fighting in the American Revolution was between Loyalists and Patriots. And all of it was between Americans in the Civil War. We know how to resist.
Man when you get a bunch of liars together it’s hard to tell which one is …lying!
US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton denied Wednesday in Nairobi that any apology had been made by her husband Bill Clinton during the ex-president’s mission gaining the release of two American journalists from North Korea. Hillary Clinton, at a press conference in Nairobi where she is just embarking on an extensive African tour, was asked to comment about the developments on the other side of the world in which her husband secured the release of the two journalists. More on this here.
There’s a special place in the afterlife for people like this woman.
A Long Island mom guzzled vodka and smoked pot in a minivan packed with young kids before speeding the wrong way down the Taconic Parkway, sparking the head-on collision that killed eight, authorities revealed yesterday. Diane Schuler had knocked back the equivalent of 10 shots of 80-proof booze and smoked marijuana as recently as 15 minutes before the horrific July 26 smash-up, officials said.
In an open letter addressed to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, more than 60 scientists take issue with the concept of man-made global warming and request that an “impartial panel” be convened as a counterbalance to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The scientists also question the credibility of the U.N. in the letter and urge Merkel to reconsider her position. “A real comprehensive study, whose value would have been absolutely essential, would have shown, even before the IPCC was founded, that humans have had no measurable effect on global warming through CO2 emissions,” they wrote.
As a matter of fact scientific evidence shows we are headed for a long term cooling trend.
Opponents of the Waxman-Markey “cap and trade” bill would do well to invoke recent scientific studies that show global surface temperatures have not increased since 1998, contrary to what climate models have predicted. U.S. policymakers who cite “consensus” on man-made global warming as justification for anti-emission regulations are relying upon outdated and misleading material from the United Nations that deliberately omits the influence of natural forces, according to climate skeptics. In fact, a growing body of evidence now points to the emergence of another cooling cycle that could persist for decades.
Quote of the day.
We intend to use a lot of the grassroots viral Internet techniques from the campaign to beat back the campaign of misstatements and outright falsehoods about the president’s efforts to reform health insurance.
-Dan Pfeiffer, White House deputy communications director
