How an Osceola County Jail inmate obtained a loaded handgun remained unanswered Tuesday as sheriff’s officials investigated an attempted jail break Monday evening. Nobody’s supposed to have a gun inside,” said a prison researcher who is not authorized to speak publicly and did not want to be identified. “That’s why all of those gun lockers are outside. You don’t want to take anything inside that inmates can get their hands on.”

An East Tennessee man visiting his son at a Nashville prison over the weekend was arrested when prison officials found weapons, drugs and cash in his vehicle, according to the Tennessee Department of Correction. Gary Carringer, 50, of Jacksboro, was taken into custody Saturday by Department of Correction Internal Affairs agents on a slew of felony charges when he showed up at the Charles Bass Correctional Complex to visit his son, Grant Carringer, 23, said spokeswoman Dorinda Carter.
A convicted felon from Snellville was arrested after a Gwinnett County deputy using a high-tech device that scans license plates found nine guns and more than 1,200 rounds of ammunition in his vehicle. When William Harold Brown drove past Deputy James Redfern on Indian Trail Road, the license plate recognition system installed in Redfern’s patrol car alerted him that the tag on Brown’s 1998 Hyundai Accent was stolen, said Gwinnett sheriff’s spokeswoman Stacey Bourbonnais.

An undercover Houston police officer was killed Tuesday night in a shootout with a man killed moments later by another officer, officials said. The officer was identified as 42-year-old Henry Canales. He joined the Houston Police Department in 1993. The identity of the other man was not available. Canales was part of an undercover team investigating stolen televisions when he was shot in the parking lot of a Walgreens drugstore at Hillcroft and Bellaire, officials said.

A Melbourne police officer is in protective custody at the Brevard County Detention Center following an arrest on charges he beat a woman during an argument. Dan Saccareccia, a four-year veteran of the department, was charged Tuesday with battery, false imprisonment and burglary after Melbourne police were called to investigate a disturbance involving the off-duty officer.

Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital is looking for dogs with pain and arthritis to participate in a study, which will look at whether or not an herbal supplement can relieve pain. The study will address growing questions about the effectiveness of herbal supplements in veterinary medicine.
Colby Curtin, a 10-year-old with a rare form of cancer, was staying alive for one thing – a movie. From the minute Colby saw the previews to the Disney-Pixar movie Up, she was desperate to see it. Colby had been diagnosed with vascular cancer about three years ago, said her mother, Lisa Curtin, and at the beginning of this month it became apparent that she would die soon and was too ill to be moved to a theater to see the film.
