About 25 people were arrested, most part of a rowdy crowd that split off on to surrounding streets after police declared the gathering an unlawful assembly, officer Karen Rayner said.

Maryland health officials say Doctors Community Hospital has been fined after failing to report that a patient died and at least seven others suffered serious harm as a result of mistakes by the medical staff. The 185-bed medical surgical hospital in Lanham paid the $30,000 fine last month for violating a Maryland law that requires hospitals to report serious medical errors.

Police officer arrested for domestic violence when he tried to prevent daughter from joining gang.

Springfield police arrested one of their own Friday afternoon after the officer got into altercation at home with his 19-year-old daughter, Sgt. John M. Delaney said. Officer Jose Diaz, 45, had been attempting to stop his daughter from joining a gang, Delaney said.

The very first lottery ticket sold in America is now up for sale at auction.

Couple on motorcycle taken to hospital after hitting bear wandering on road.

A man and woman from Sanbornville, N.H. escaped serious injuries Saturday after their motorcycle slammed into a bear on Interstate 93, said Vermont State Police. David Champy Sr., 59, was operating a 1991 Harley Davidson in the northbound lane of I-93 in Waterford when the bike hit the bear, police said.

After more than 20 years in prison, a former Lavallette man was ordered released today by a federal judge after an appeals court overturned his 1988 double murder convictions. Paul Kamienski, 61, was convicted in the drug-related killings of a husband and wife in Toms River.

A man who says he’s afraid to fly is spending the month of June living on a plane. Mark Malkoff, 33, a comedian and filmmaker, boarded his first flight June 1 from LaGuardia in New York, where he lives, heading to Atlanta. He plans to stay on AirTran flights until June 30. The airline offers wireless Internet service, so Malkoff is posting updates about his trip on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and on his blog, www.MarkOnAirTran.com.

Two former Iowa police officers sentenced to long prison terms for sexual assault convictions.

A jury convicted former assistant Creston police Chief John Sickels and former Chief James Christensen of second-degree sexual abuse in March. Wednesday, Sickels was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Christensen was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

A woman got the surprise of her life when she walked into her garage to see why her dogs were barking. She found a full-grown mountain lion. Ana Lee Spray, 23, says her three toy chihuahuas were barking so loudly that it woke her up Saturday morning. She couldn’t figure out what was wrong, and got up to check on the dogs. When she saw the animals standing guard at the opening of the garage, Spray investigated further.

120,000 years after being buried nearly two miles under ice sheet tiny bacterium brought back to life in lab.

A tiny bacterium has been coaxed back to life after spending 120,000 years buried three kilometres deep in the Greenland ice sheet. Researchers who found it say it could resemble microbes that may have evolved in ice on other planets. Officially named Herminiimonas glaciei, the bug consists of rods just 0.9 micrometres long and 0.4 micrometres in diameter, about 10 to 50 times smaller than the well-known bacterium, Escherichia coli.

Dumbest new product on the shelf award goes to the “anti stab” knife now on sale in the U.K.

The first “anti-stab” knife is to go on sale in Britain, designed to work as normal in the kitchen but to be ineffective as a weapon. The knife has a rounded edge instead of a point and will snag on clothing and skin to make it more difficult to stab someone. It was invented by industrial designer John Cornock, who was inspired by a documentary in which doctors advocated banning traditional knives.

57 year old armed man shot dead when he breaks into house and tries to rob homeowner.

A Los Angeles man who was trying to rob a Barstow home Friday night with two others was shot and killed by the homeowner, police said. A man who lives in the Teton Street house was attacked by three home invasion robbers about 10 p.m. as they attempted to break into his house, police said.

Indiana soldier to auction off very rare piece of history.

A rare leather-bound book that played an influential role in America’s early history could bring a windfall for a soldier training for his second tour in Iraq. Indiana National Guard Capt. Nathan Harlan was a high school junior when he paid $7 for a 1788 first edition of volume one of “The Federalist” — a two-volume book of essays calling for the ratification of the U.S. Constitution.
