A 17-year-old Terrytown man was arrested on charges of aggravated rape and first-degree murder of an 8-month-old child Saturday afternoon, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said. Arnold T. Ross, of 136 Friedrichs Road in Terrytown, was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Facility. No bond is available on the first-degree murder charge.

As a teenager during the Great Depression, Eleanor Benz, now 90, watched her parents struggle to provide for seven children. In her senior year at the Chicago Public Schools’ Lake View High, Benz dropped out of school to help. “I only had a few months left, but a job opened up where my sister worked, and that was a rare thing in 1936, to find a job before you finished high school,” said Benz, of Gurnee.
St. Louis man first Missouri fatality this year related to tick bite.
A St. Louis-area man has died of a tick-borne disease, the first death related to ticks this year in Missouri. Laboratory analysis showed the unnamed man was infected with a bacteria that causes ehrlichiosis, a disease similar to Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Describing herself as the “new face of Judaism,” Alysa Stanton became the first black female rabbi in the country during an ordination in Cincinnati. Stanton, of Blue Ash, was among 14 rabbis ordained Saturday at the Plum Street Temple. She will serve as rabbi of the predominantly white Congregation Bayt Shalom in Greenville, N.C., beginning this summer.

A nearly 14-hour standoff on a ranch in North Dakota ended Saturday with the arrest of two men who escaped from a rural Alabama prison more than 1,200 miles away, a federal law enforcement official said. Joshua Southwick, 26, and Ashton Mink, 22, were apprehended following two shootouts with North Dakota law enforcement, nearly two weeks after their brazen escape from the Perry County Detention Center in Uniontown, Ala.

An alleged carjacker was shot and killed in north Houston Saturday morning, police said. At about 6:15 a.m., witnesses pulled Darryl Milton Franklin Jr., 37, out of a car that he was reportedly breaking into in the 1100 block of Langwick Drive.

Three soldiers and three Mexican bystanders were wounded. Several Mexican tourists were evacuated from small hotels in the old Acapulco neighborhood, which was once popular with Hollywood stars but has since become run-down.
Petrobras confirms that a third new well, which is still in the drilling phase and known as Iracema, provides proof that the Tupi field, in the Santos Basin, holds between five and eight billion barrels of recoverable light oil and natural gas. Brazilian state-controlled oil company Petrobras said the drilling of another well in the Tupi area has served to confirm expectations surrounding that massive field located deep below the ocean floor.

Police say it all started around 3 a.m. Saturday. Investigators allege after drinking at both a friends home and a bar, husband and wife Paul and Carisa Walz of East Price Hill were in their car near the intersection of State Route 20 and State Route 212 in Hebron Kentucky when things went wrong. Carisa allegedly opened the car door and leaned out to vomit.

An investigation into alleged illegal activities has resulted in the arrest of the Log Cabin police chief. Henderson County District Attorney Scott McKee said his office received information about the alleged wrongdoings of Log Cabin Police Chief Rebecca “Becky” Baskin, 50, after the FBI and the Texas Rangers had been contacted.
Bear cub gets head stuck in bird feeder, with pictures.
A bear cub is now free as a bird, thanks to the efforts of a Burnett County landowner and the DNR. A cub had its head stuck in a bird feeder and this was no temporary problem. The landowner called the DNR last weekend when they first saw the bear near Grantsburg. DNR officers responded, but the mother was very protective and wouldn’t let them get close. Despite the bucket on its head, the cub could still climb a tree, so it proved to be elusive.
Fellas begin sending in their applications to Nevada brothel hoping to become prostitutes.
The madam of a rural Nye County brothel says the applications from men who want to be prostitutes are starting to roll in. Bobbi Davis, owner of the Shady Lady Ranch about 125 miles from Las Vegas, said she has received about 25 telephone calls and 10 men have sent in their pictures and other information. But some of these men don’t understand they are not going to be servicing “the most beautiful women,” Davis said. The man will have to work with any woman who picks the man from the lineup, Davis added.
A Phoenix police sergeant was dragged three blocks Saturday after a woman trapped the officer in a car window and drove off. The ordeal began around 5 p.m., when the sergeant and a plain clothes detective saw a suspicious vehicle near 17th and Missouri avenues, police said. They called for uniforms officers to stop the vehicle. The officers arrested the 31-year old driver on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.
