Democrats launch counterattack to save Harry Reid’s career
Democrats are preparing to throw the race card back in the laps of Republicans as part of a counterattack designed to help save Harry Reid’s political career. First, Reid’s allies plan to distribute the NAACP vote ratings of Republican senators who have scolded him. The data will be made available to editorial boards, cable programs and the blogosphere — including votes on minimum wage, community-oriented policing, education funding and HIV/AIDS programs. Separately, the Congressional Black Caucus plans to issue a new statement Monday, defending Reid and brushing back Republicans. [This blatant double standard regarding racism is a non starter for Republicans. There are too many black “leaders” who’s careers and bank accounts depend on whipping out the race card when politically expedient and too many blacks who are completely ignorant of past history. As long as the Democrats continue to promise the black community everything under the sun without them having to pay or work for it they will continue to look the other way when the true colors of the true racists are exposed…ed]

Oh, this one is way too good to pass on writing about it. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid got nailed for uttering what may be one of the most stupid — and flagrantly racist — comments in some time. Here’s the kicker, and what makes this so good: The remarks were about the leader of his party. That would be President Obama of course, who, according to Reid, is refreshingly bereft of “Negro dialect” when he speaks. “Negro dialect”? Is Reid’s mind stuck way back in the 1940s? (SNIP) How has Obama reacted to all this? Why, by accepting Reid’s pathetic apology and declaring “the book is closed” on the matter. White guys like Don Imus must be wondering where Obama was when they really needed him. Sharpton: Clinton ‘Coffee’ Remark About Obama ‘Disturbing’
The Rev. Al Sharpton on Monday said he was disturbed by condescending remarks reportedly made by former President Bill Clinton about Barack Obama during the 2008 campaign. Sharpton was referring to a passage in the new book, “Game Change,” which recounts the conversation Clinton had with the late Sen. Ted Kennedy when he was trying to convince the liberal lion of the Senate to endorse his wife for president. “A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee,” Clinton told Kennedy, according to the book — a comment that angered Kennedy, who later endorsed Obama. Sharpton, speaking on Fox News, defended Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid over a passage in the book in which he said Obama doesn’t have a “Negro dialect” unless he wants one. The first signs of abandonment from within Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s own party emerged Sunday, as some Democrats said his racially charged comments about President Obama have placed his already perilous reelection prospects on the precipice. “He’s in deep trouble, I think,” said one senior aide to a member of the House Democratic leadership. “Even with the apology, no matter what it’s a negative thing. There are a lot of minorities that vote [in Nevada].” Asked whether lawmakers who are next in line to be majority leader – such as Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, or Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois – would begin to target Reid, the senior Democrat said there would be no point. More Nevadans unhappy with reform package and in Reid’s efforts pushing it
Support for the health care reform package moving through Congress continues to drop among Nevadans, as does support among the state’s Democrats and independents for the work done on the bill by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a new poll commissioned by the Las Vegas Review-Journal shows. That same poll shows nearly one in five Nevadans would elect to pay a fine by the government rather than buy health insurance under the new plan. (SNIP) Perhaps even more critical for Reid, President Barack Obama’s point man for passage of the legislation, is the fact that his disapproval rating among independents for his work on health care rose to 74 percent, compared to 53 percent in December. Blagojevich: ‘I’m blacker than Barack Obama’
Ousted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich says he’s “blacker than Barack Obama” and tells Esquire magazine that he was a real person in a political arena dominated by phonies. Blagojevich, referring to the president as “this guy,” says Obama was elected based simply on hope. “What the (expletive)? Everything he’s saying’s on the teleprompter,” Blagojevich told the magazine for a story in its February issue, which hits newsstands Jan. 19. “I’m blacker than Barack Obama. I shined shoes. I grew up in a five-room apartment. Stimulus money sent to phantom ZIP codes in North Carolina
The federal government sent 2.5 million stimulus dollars to North Carolina ZIP codes that don’t exist. The information came from the government’s own Web site — Recovery.gov. The site was set up to track the distribution of the $787 billion made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It lists 479 North Carolina ZIP codes as the destination of $4.2 billion in grants, contracts, and loans. Four of those ZIP codes — 24858, 28389, 23854, and 27600 — are nowhere to be found on U.S. Postal Service maps. In the four ZIP codes, the Web site reports, the $2.5 million created 0.5 jobs all told. All North Carolina ZIP codes start with 27 or 28, so projects listed in 24858 and 23854 ZIP codes would not be based in North Carolina, even if such ZIP codes existed. If Republicans won’t oblige Michael Steele by firing him at their winter meeting later this month, he may have to find a reason to quit.Steele has been goading his critics within the Republican National Committee, who by now probably comprise a majority of the group’s 168 members. Those who don’t like his style should “shut up” and “get a life,” Steele says. “‘If you don’t want me in the job, fire me,” Steele dared in an ABC Radio interview last week after the latest reports of influential GOPers criticizing his first year in office. Scott Brown is an impressive candidate — intelligent, experienced, good-humored and handsome. Brown’s record of public service is distinguished as well. Not only is he in his third term as a state senator, he served three terms before that as a state representative. More impressive than even that, however, is his service in uniform. Scott Brown swearing-in would be stalled to pass health-care reform
It looks like the fix is in on national health-care reform – and it all may unfold on Beacon Hill. At a business forum in Boston Friday, interim Sen. Paul Kirk predicted that Congress would pass a health-care reform bill this month. “We want to get this resolved before President Obama’s State of the Union address in early to mid-February,” Kirk told reporters at a Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce breakfast. The longtime aide and confidant of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who was handpicked by Gov. Deval Patrick after a controversial legal change to hold Kennedy’s seat, vowed to vote for the bill even if Republican state Sen. Scott Brown, who opposes the health-care reform legislation, prevails in a Jan. 19 special election. [The depths of the sleaze in the DemocRAT party is immeasurable. Largest U.S. farm group rallies against climate bill
The largest U.S. farm group will oppose aggressively “misguided” climate legislation pending in Congress and fight animal rights activists, said American Farm Bureau Federation president Bob Stallman on Sunday. In a speech opening the four-day AFBF convention, Stallman said American farmers and ranchers “must aggressively respond to extremists” and “misguided, activist-driven regulation … The days of their elitist power grabs are over.” Stallman’s remarks held a sharper edge than usual for the 6 million-member AFBF, the largest U.S. farm group and often described as the most influential. Its convention opens a string of wintertime meetings where farm groups take positions on public issues. Britain’s big freeze is the start of a worldwide trend towards colder weather that seriously challenges global warming theories, eminent scientists claimed yesterday. The world has entered a ‘cold mode’ which is likely to bring a global dip in temperatures which will last for 20 to 30 years, they say. Road projects don’t help unemployment
Ten months into President Barack Obama’s first economic stimulus plan, a surge in spending on roads and bridges has had no effect on local unemployment and only barely helped the beleaguered construction industry, an Associated Press analysis has found. Spend a lot or spend nothing at all, it didn’t matter, the AP analysis showed: Local unemployment rates rose and fell regardless of how much stimulus money Washington poured out for transportation, raising questions about Obama’s argument that more road money would address an “urgent need to accelerate job growth.” Obama wants a second stimulus bill from Congress that relies in part on more road and bridge spending, projects the president said are “at the heart of our effort to accelerate job growth.” [While infrastructure projects are important and necessary blowing billions of taxpayer dollars in the name of “putting people back to work” is just stupid. Popular kids’ trinkets loaded with toxic metal
Barred from using lead in children’s jewelry because of its toxicity, some Chinese manufacturers have been substituting the more dangerous heavy metal cadmium in sparkling charm bracelets and shiny pendants being sold throughout the United States, an Associated Press investigation shows. The most contaminated piece analyzed in lab testing performed for the AP contained a startling 91 percent cadmium by weight. The cadmium content of other contaminated trinkets, all purchased at national and regional chains or franchises, tested at 89 percent, 86 percent and 84 percent by weight. The testing also showed that some items easily shed the heavy metal, raising additional concerns about the levels of exposure to children. China Ends U.S.’s Reign as Largest Auto Market
China supplanted the U.S. as the world’s largest auto market after its 2009 vehicle sales jumped 46 percent, ending more than a century of American dominance that started with the Model T Ford. The nation’s sales of passenger cars, buses and trucks rose to 13.6 million, the fastest pace in at least 10 years, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Handcuffed, disarmed for obeying the law
Charlie Mitchener is a 61-year-old general building contractor with an office near Patrick Lane and Fort Apache Road in Las Vegas. He holds permits allowing him to legally carry concealed weapons in Nevada, Florida and Utah. Mark McGwire admits using steroids
Mark McGwire finally came clean, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball’s home run record in 1998. McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade. During a 20-minute telephone interview shortly afterward, his voice repeatedly cracked. “It’s very emotional, it’s telling family members, friends and coaches, you know, it’s former teammates to try to get ahold of, you know, that I’m coming clean and being honest,” he said. “It’s the first time they’ve ever heard me, you know, talk about this.
