THE OBAMA administration announced last week that it did not need and would not seek new legislation to govern indefinite detention of some terrorism suspects at the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In so doing, the administration has chosen the politically expedient and intellectually dishonest route. (SNIP) The American Civil Liberties Union has consistently opposed any indefinite detention regime and pushed for detainees to be charged in federal or military courts or released. So we wouldn’t expect them to join us in criticizing Mr. Obama for failing to seek a new legal regime. But it is odd that the same policy which, when pursued by the Bush administration, constituted “thumbing its nose at the Constitution” and putting a “stain on America’s name at home and abroad” now elicits nothing but a few measured tsk-tsks. [The leftist whiners at the Washington Compost call MR. Øbama a liar and a coward. Again, Joe Wilson was right on the money…ed]
Bill Clinton speaks of vast, right-wing conspiracy
Bill Clinton says a vast, right-wing conspiracy that once targeted him is now focusing on President Barack Obama. The ex-president made the comment in a television interview when he was asked about one of the signature moments of the Monica Lewinsky affair over a decade ago. Back then, first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton used the term “vast, right-wing conspiracy” to describe how her husband’s political enemies were out to destroy his presidency. Bill Clinton was asked on NBC’s “Meet the Press” whether the conspiracy is still there. He replied: “You bet. Sure it is. It’s not as strong as it was because America has changed demographically. But it’s as virulent as it was.” [The only thing that SAVED Clinton’s presidency was Republicans sweeping into power in Congress in 1994. As far as this “right wing conspiracy” crap, how does this serial philanderer explain the election of the most left wing president and Congress this country has ever seen?…ed]
General Motor’s return policy may not be worth the hassle
You fell in love with that $22,000 Chevy Malibu because of its color, style and price. After driving it home, you realize it’s not what you wanted. Maybe it’s the way it handles on the highway, the location of the cup holders or the shape of the seats. Don’t worry. Bring it back for a refund, no questions asked, says GM’s Chairman and new TV pitchman Edward Whitacre Jr. But is it really as easy as returning an ill-fitting shirt to Macy’s? [C’mon, what did you expect from the Øbama owned Government Motors, straight up honesty?…ed]
Well-Known New York Times Columnist William Safire Dead at 79
Pulitzer Prize-winning conservative columnist, language expert and former White House speechwriter William Safire died Sunday, his assistant said. He was 79. Safire had been diagnosed with cancer and died a hospice in Maryland, said his assistant, Rosemary Shields. She declined to specify the type of cancer Safire had or say when he had been diagnosed. Pope urges Europe to remember Christian heritage
Pope Benedict XVI said Sunday that all of Europe — and not only this ex-communist country — must acknowledge its Christian heritage as it copes with rising immigration from other cultures and religions. The second day of Benedict’s pilgrimage to this highly secular country was marked by a joyous open-air Mass that drew tens of thousands of pilgrims and a sober message for the entire continent. “History has demonstrated the absurdities to which man descends when he excludes God from the horizon of his choices and actions,” Benedict said. President Obama is said to be reviewing the situation in Afghanistan to help him settle on a US strategy there. Better late than never, we guess. Still, after two years of campaigning and eight months more in office — indeed, after already having sent 21,000 more troops there — the fact that the president still lacks a plan is beyond stunning. Commander-in-chief isn’t exactly a post for someone who needs this much on-the-job training. Just six months ago, in March (though well after he ordered the extra troops), Obama rolled out what was billed as his “comprehensive, new strategy” for Afghanistan. A right-wing conspiracy caused Congress to drop federal funding for the embattled community group ACORN, chief organizer Bertha Lewis told supporters last week. In an e-mail obtained by The Post, Lewis begs for donations and blasts Congress for cutting ACORN’s money. Lawmakers acted after a devastating videotape surfaced of the group’s workers in Brooklyn advising an undercover “pimp” and “hooker” how to cheat on taxes and run a brothel. “They [Congress] did it because Fox News and the right-wing smear machine told them to do it,” she wrote. Experts claim recession is over, but New Yorkers aren’t quite convinced
Pundits proclaim the recession is “technically” over. Yeah, right. The Daily News Impact Panel begs to differ. “Implying the recession is over is like saying, ‘Yes, there’s been a nuclear detonation, but it’s over now, so relax – and never mind that we’re living in a post-apocalyptic world of unemployment, foreclosures and bankruptcies,'” said Ann Marie Spinosa of Astoria, Queens, who’s on a panel of New Yorkers who blog about coping with hard times on our Web site, NYDailyNews.com. U.S. Job Seekers Exceed Openings by Record Ratio
Despite signs that the economy has resumed growing, unemployed Americans now confront a job market that is bleaker than ever in the current recession, and employment prospects are still getting worse. Job seekers now outnumber openings six to one, the worst ratio since the government began tracking open positions in 2000. According to the Labor Department’s latest numbers, from July, only 2.4 million full-time permanent jobs were open, with 14.5 million people officially unemployed. And even though the pace of layoffs is slowing, many companies remain anxious about growth prospects in the months ahead, making them reluctant to add to their payrolls. In Canada, a move toward a private healthcare option
In British Columbia, private clinics and surgical centers are capitalizing on patients who might otherwise pay for faster treatment in the U.S. The courts will consider their legality next month. When the pain in Christina Woodkey’s legs became so severe that she could no long hike or cross-country ski, she went to her local health clinic. The Calgary, Canada, resident was told she’d need to see a hip specialist. Because the problem was not life-threatening, however, she’d have to wait about a year. So wait she did. US Congress report argues Zelaya’s ousting was “legal and constitutional”
A report from the US Library of Congress legal branch released this week concluded that the ousting of elected Honduran president Manuel Zelaya was “legal and constitutional”. The report from the Congressional Research Service, CRS, an office from the Library of Congress which provides legal analysis and support for policies to members of both houses of the Legislative branch established however, that the expulsion of Mr. Zelaya from Costa Rica was “illegal”. [But the marxists running our government are not happy at all with one of their own being removed from office no matter how legal and constitutional the action is…ed]
As I write this column, Manuel Zelaya, the Hugo Chavez wannabe who the Obama Administration wants to install as president of Honduras over the objections of the overwhelming majority of its people, is holed up in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa. In an interview with the Miami Herald published Thursday, Mr. Zelaya claimed he is being tortured by “Israeli mercenaries” who are attacking him with radiation beamed through the embassy’s walls. Mr. Zelaya sounds as if he is a few tacos short of a combination plate. His odd statements make President Obama’s support for him all the more puzzling and despicable. Mr. Zelaya was elected Honduran president in 2005, and wanted to serve another term. But the Honduran Constitution permits the president a single term. Attorney: Oklahoma City bombing tapes appear edited
Long-secret security tapes showing the chaos immediately after the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building are blank in the minutes before the blast and appear to have been edited, an attorney who obtained the recordings said Sunday. (SNIP) “Four cameras in four different locations going blank at basically the same time on the morning of April 19, 1995. There ain’t no such thing as a coincidence,” Trentadue said. He said government officials claim the security cameras did not record the minutes before the bombing because “they had run out of tape” or “the tape was being replaced.” [Makes one wonder what the Clinton administration was trying to hide doesn’t it?…ed]
Silvio Berlusconi calls Barack Obama tanned – again
Silvio Berlusconi, Italy’s gaffe-prone prime minister, has again referred to US President Barack Obama as “suntanned”, days after being snubbed by Michelle Obama at the G20 meeting in Pittsburgh. “I bring you greetings from a person who is called…a person who is sun-tanned…Barack Obama,” the smiling 72-year-old politician told a crowd of cheering supporters in Milan on Sunday. “You wouldn’t believe it, but they go sunbathing at the beach together – his wife is also sun-tanned.” [Those wacky Italians I’ll tell ya. More school: Obama would curtail summer vacation
Students beware: The summer vacation you just enjoyed could be sharply curtailed if President Barack Obama gets his way. Obama says American kids spend too little time in school, putting them at a disadvantage with other students around the globe. “Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas,” the president said earlier this year. “Not with Malia and Sasha, not in my family, and probably not in yours. But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom.” [It’s high time we abolish the US Dept of Indoctrination and put the education of our children back into the hands of parents and local officials but then again that may cut back on all of the Øbama worship crap being rammed down our kids throats…ed]
Quote of the day.
I was up at the G20 — just a little aside — I was up at the G20, and some of you saw those big flags and all the world leaders come in and Michelle and I are shaking hands with them. One of the leaders — I won’t mention who it was — he comes up to me. We take the picture, we go behind. He says, ‘Barack, explain to me this health care debate.’ He says, ‘We don’t understand it. You’re trying to make sure everybody has health care and they’re putting a Hitler mustache on you — I don’t — that doesn’t make sense to me. Explain that to me.’
-Barack Hussein Øbama relaying what he claims happened at the G20 summit as he spoke in front of the Congressional Black Caucus. Naturally I just had to throw the BS flag on this one vis-a-vis Joe Wilson.
