Media Malpractice: Tom Brokaw’s World Implodes
With the passing of Walter Cronkite, Mr. Brokaw is considered perhaps the new “dean” of journalism. As such the former NBC News anchor is periodically summoned forth to assess the current world, an occasion that presented itself recently on the venerable NBC Sunday newser Meet the Press. Sitting cheek by jowl with New York Times columnist Tom Friedman, Brokaw joined him to riff on the Internet and the state of journalism today, an opportunity occasioned by the resignation of Van Jones, he of the Truther brigades (and much more) and the Obama White House. Mr. Jones’ resignation was prompted by a virtual parade of videos and documents in which Jones, in his own words and deeds, presented himself as an overripe Marxist with a tendency to the nutty paranoia of the extreme left. This material was discovered by Fox commentator Glenn Beck, doubtless with an assist from citizens who had scanned the Internet, easily unearthing Jones’ ravings. Likely Voters Overwhelmingly Disapprove of ObamaCare
A Zogby International/O’Leary Report poll of 4,200 likely voters has some startling results concerning attitudes toward health-care reform: Asked if they agree or disagree that the federal government should require all Americans to purchase health insurance or face a fine — a provision favored by Democrats — 70.2 percent said they disagree, and only 18.5 percent agree. The rest are not sure. A resounding 75 percent of respondents said that taxes should not be raised to fund a government-run health insurance program for Americans who do not have health insurance. (SNIP) Other findings: 78.5 percent believe tort reform is needed, and 77.3 percent oppose taxing employer-provided health-care benefits. Health Care Reform: Support for Health Care Plan Falls Back To Pre-Speech Levels
Following President Obama’s speech to Congress last week, support for his health care reform plan increased steadily to a peak of 51% yesterday. However, the bounce appears to be over. The latest daily tracking shows that support has fallen all the way back to pre-speech levels. Forty-five percent (45%) of all voters nationwide now favor the plan while 52% are opposed. A week ago, 44% supported the proposal and 53% were opposed. Doctors: Malpractice Costs the Biggest Money-Saver in Tort Reform
Many physicians and Republican lawmakers were happy to hear President Obama raise the issue of medical malpractice in his address to Congress last week, but now are asking why the president wants to test “demonstration projects” when reforms have already proven successful on the state level. “Whole states are demonstration projects,” said Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas. “Texas passed tort reform in 2003 and … insurance premiums went down 30 percent. California passed tort reform and premiums went down 40 percent. Let’s enact tort reform. Congressman Suggests People Will Don ‘White Hoods’ If Wilson Not Rebuked
Rep. Joe Wilson’s outburst last week is drawing new recriminations from his colleagues, with a member of the Congressional Black Caucus suggesting that a failure to rebuke the South Carolina Republican is tantamount to supporting the most blatant form of organized racism in American history. In an obvious reference to the Ku Klux Klan, Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., said Tuesday that people will be putting on “white hoods and white uniforms again and riding through the countryside” if emerging racist attitudes, which he says were subtly supported by Wilson, are not rebuked. House Republican Leaders Ask IRS to Sever Ties with ACORN
House Republican leaders today requested that the Internal Revenue Service sever all ties with ACORN. ACORN right now assists low and middle class citizens with income tax preparation. The group says that since 2004, it has helped low- and middle-income Americans prepare approximately 150,000 free tax returns totaling $190 million in refunds as well as increased participation in the earned income tax credit. But House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., and Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., the ranking Republican on the House Ways and Means committee, today wrote to IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman encouraging him to end any referrals by the IRS to ACORN offices for tax preparation consultation. Last week, we saw some pretty disturbing activities revealed in the undercover footage from ACORN Housing’s Baltimore office. By any measure of conduct, the actions of ACORN’s employees should never have happened. It turns out the actions shouldn’t have happened for another, very simple, reason: ACORN can’t legally operate in the state of Maryland. According to the following documents, ACORN, Inc.–the parent organization of all things ACORN–forfeited its corporate charter in Maryland in 2006. ACORN Housing forfeited its corporate charter in 2008. Any ACORN office in the state of Maryland is potentially operating illegally. Pressure is building for a top-to-bottom review of ACORN in the wake of undercover videos showing the organization giving advice on how to skirt federal laws, with a top Senate Republican calling for a “thorough” investigation and other lawmakers proposing sanctions. House Minority Leader John Boehner introduced legislation Tuesday that would break all federal government ties with ACORN — the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. Judge lets victims’ kin sue S.F. over sanctuary
The family of a father and two sons who were slain in San Francisco last year can go to state court with a claim that the city is to blame for failing to turn their alleged killer over to immigration authorities when he was arrested earlier as a juvenile, a federal judge has ruled. City Attorney Dennis Herrera had asked U.S. District Judge Susan Illston to rule on the claim herself after dismissing the rest of the suit last month by Tony Bologna’s widow and daughter. But Illston said Friday that the remainder of the family’s case – that the city’s negligence caused the killings – belongs in Superior Court because it is based on state law and challenges San Francisco’s policies.
