Well, William Rice didn’t actually give MoveOn the finger — his pinky was forcibly removed by an Obamacare supporter’s teeth. Rice, a 65-year-old real-estate appraiser from Newbury Park, Calif., expected some heated arguments when he went to a health care protest in Thousand Oaks. He did not expect to leave without his finger. Rice was part of a small group of counter-protesters who showed up to a MoveOn-sponsored “We Can’t Afford to Wait” vigil. The two groups were on opposite sides of the street. At one point, a man from the MoveOn side of the street crossed over to confront Obama critics. Rice got in an altercation with the man, who bit off his pinky finger in the scuffle, down to the second knuckle, Rice said. U.S. unemployment rate jumps to 26-year high of 9.7%
U.S. payrolls have dropped by 6.9 million to a total of 131.2 million since the recession began in December 2007, the government data showed. Unemployment has increased by 7.4 million during the recession to stand at 14.9 million. The 216,000 decline in payrolls was close to market expectations of a 233,000 drop, but the unemployment rate rose higher than the 9.5% level expected. The unemployment rate was 9.4% in July. Patient safety is being put at risk because of medication errors which have more than doubled in two years, a report has shown. More than 86,000 mistakes including drugs being given to the wrong person or the wrong dose being administered were recorded in a year. But the safety watchdog said it believed fewer than 10 per cent of errors were being reported by the NHS, meaning the true figure was probably close to one million. Muslim arrested for ‘making up BNP kidnap story’
A Muslim community leader who claimed he had been kidnapped at knifepoint after a BNP hate campaign has been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. Noor Ramjanally, 36, of Valley Hill, alleged in August that he was abducted by two men, bundled into a car boot, driven to Epping Forest in Essex and told to stop his religious work. Though Illinoisans displayed a measure of pride when Barack Obama was elected to the presidency almost a year ago, rising unemployment and his push for a controversial health-care reform package have left fewer than six in 10 voters in his home state approving of the job he has done in the White House, a new Tribune/WGN poll found. The survey of 700 registered voters in Illinois showed 59 percent approved of the job the Democratic president has done in his nearly eight months in the Oval Office, while one-third disapproved. Eight percent had no opinion in the poll, which has an error margin of 4 percentage points. On its face, a near-60 percent job approval rating would be welcomed by just about any politician — but the poll indicated several troubling signs for Obama. Football star tackles girl with gun on school bus
A Mississippi high school football player is being hailed as a hero for saving a school bus full of elementary and high school students from a gun-wielding girl. Surveillance camera footage on the Yazoo County school bus on Tuesday captured 18-year-old Kaleb Eulls tackling the 14-year-old girl while the children evacuated the bus. Eulls managed to wrestle the .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun from her, Yazoo County Sheriff Thomas Vaughan told CNN. The Congressional Black Caucus — alarmed by reports that President Obama may plan to ditch the public option and reduce the scale of health care reform — is pre-emptively warning the president to express his “unwavering support” for the progressive provisions in his speech next week. In a letter to Obama, CBC Chairwoman Rep. Barbara Lee writes:

Cass Sunstein, President Barack Obama’s nominee to head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), has advocated a policy under which the government would “presume” someone has consented to having his or her organs removed for transplantation into someone else when they die unless that person has explicitly indicated that his or her organs should not be taken. Under such a policy, hospitals would harvest organs from people who never gave permission for this to be done.
